Mixed Bag Jazz is Western Colorado's premier jazz ensemble — a quartet that brings world-class musical pedigree to every room they play.
The band was founded by two musicians whose resumes are anything but local. Trumpeter Zan Waller spent more than two decades performing as a professional musician in the United States Army and Navy, playing venues and events around the world. Co-founder Todd Humphrey is a retired music educator with a career rooted in the Southern California professional music scene, where he built a reputation as a go-to performer across styles and settings.
Together in Montrose, they've built something rare: a jazz group that plays with genuine sophistication without taking itself too seriously. Mixed Bag Jazz draws from the Great American Songbook — the classic standards of Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and beyond — while weaving in modern jazz sensibility and the occasional surprise. Their sets shift in mood, tempo, and style. No two performances are exactly alike.
That versatility is the whole idea. Whether the room calls for intimate background jazz during a wedding cocktail hour, an energetic set at a regional festival, or elegant ambient music for a corporate dinner, Mixed Bag Jazz reads the room and delivers.
